The basic movement of Ngarojeng Dance is inspired by Ajeng music, which emerged and developed in the outskirts of Betawi. Ajeng music, or Gamelan Ajeng music, is originally the musical accompaniment of Betawi Leather Puppet show.
Ngarojeng dance was created by Wiwiek Widiastuti, a choreographer. Ajeng’s music expresses persistent, patience, and courage in life. In other words, this dance wants to show that Betawi women in the past had the ability to take care for their homes and environments.
This dance is often performed in various people’s activities, as well as in official events of Jakarta Regional or Central Government.
